Meta and Constellation have entered into an agreement that allows the company to purchase 1.1 gigawatts of nuclear energy to support its growing artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
Agreement with Constellation
Meta has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation to purchase 1.1 gigawatts of nuclear energy from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois starting in 2027. This agreement ensures the facility's operation, which was previously slated to close in 2017. The deal does not require the involvement of Illinois' Zero Emission Credit program.
Energy Provision for AI
Generating energy through nuclear power is essential to meet the increasing energy needs in the technology sector, especially for AI infrastructure. The International Energy Agency projects that energy consumption in data centers will more than double by 2030. Meta is investing $65 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025 alone.
Economic Impact on the Region
The agreement will help preserve over 1,100 jobs in the region and generate more than $13.5 million in annual tax revenue. The closure of the Clinton plant could have resulted in significant economic losses, including an additional 34 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 20 years.
The agreement between Meta and Constellation highlights the importance of nuclear energy for the future of AI and digital technologies, while maintaining economic stability in the region.
