Meta's Superintelligence Lab (MSL) aims to develop new large-scale AI models by assembling many Chinese researchers, which has sparked widespread interest both in China and beyond.
Chinese Talents at Meta
The new lab consists of 11 employees, among whom seven are of Chinese origin. These researchers, many of whom graduated from prestigious Chinese universities, have gained recognition in AI technology.
For instance, four of the new hires came from Tsinghua University, which is often compared to MIT.
Import of Conflicts in the Sector
Meta's strategy has raised tensions in the tech sector. OpenAI's CEO Altman stated that Meta is offering unofficial signing bonuses up to $100 million to attract potential recruits from startups like OpenAI. This coincides with his critique of Meta's approaches.
Team Composition and Their Achievements
The team includes highly qualified professionals, such as: - Chang Huiwen, a Princeton graduate who previously worked at OpenAI. - Lin Ji, who completed his PhD at MIT and has experience working at companies such as Google and Nvidia. - Sun Pei, who focuses on research at DeepMind and previously worked at Google.
Each of the new hires will bring unique skills and experience to the Meta project.
The establishment of Meta's Superintelligence Lab, focusing on Chinese researchers, highlights China's growing influence in AI and underscores the competition among major players in this field.
