Japanese investment firm Metaplanet recently added 497 Bitcoin to its reserves, spending $43.9 million. This led to a 19% increase in their stock on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
New Bitcoin Acquisition
Metaplanet recently acquired 497 Bitcoin, increasing its total reserves to 2,888 BTC. This acquisition occurred amidst a 8.5% decrease in Bitcoin price over two weeks. The company's CEO, Simon Gerovich, noted that this is their second purchase of the week following the previous acquisition of 156 BTC.
Future Strategy
In the long term, Metaplanet plans to accumulate 21,000 Bitcoins by 2026. This will actively promote cryptocurrency adoption in Japan. Despite the recent price drop, the company recorded $66 million in profits in Q1 2025.
Partnership and International Expansion Plans
Metaplanet recently partnered with SBI VC Trade to avail crypto custody services, which Gerovich says will support their Bitcoin accumulation strategy. International listings on platforms like the New York Stock Exchange are being considered.
With its recent acquisitions, Metaplanet has become the 12th largest corporate Bitcoin holder in the world and the largest in Asia. The company continues to expand its presence in the cryptocurrency market both in Japan and beyond.
