A recent filing by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) may have unwittingly revealed some fraud victims with MoonPay executives in the spotlight.
Connection to Fraudulent Transactions
The DOJ filing indicates two victims, referred to as 'Ivan' and 'Mouna,' sent $250,300 in USDT to a scammer impersonating Steve Witkoff, co-chair of President Donald Trump's inaugural committee. Binance records have identified the wallet as belonging to a Nigerian individual based in Lagos.
MoonPay Remains Silent
Per the filing, the scammer's location was traced using IP geolocation data. Emails from the account were found to originate from Nigeria, not the U.S. An investigation is underway to unearth details of Ehiremen Aigbokhan's fraudulent activities. As of publication, MoonPay management has not provided any official statement.
DOJ's Crackdown on Fraudsters
The DOJ has been actively targeting fraud, seizing over $225 million in cryptocurrency related to fraudulent investment schemes. These funds were laundered through fake investment scams aimed at defrauding individuals in the crypto industry.
The fraud scandal involving MoonPay executives raises questions about the security of digital assets and the importance of vigilance in the cryptocurrency market.
