The Cameroon Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB) has fined two of the country's major telecom operators, MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon, a total of $4.6 million for violating their licensing obligations.
Reasons for the Fine
According to TRB, the fines resulted from inspections conducted between April and May 2024. The regulator found that both MTN and Orange failed to meet required network coverage and service quality commitments, leading to accessibility issues in key regions.
Fine Amounts
MTN Cameroon was fined $1.8 million, while Orange Cameroon faced a $2.5 million penalty for inadequate service quality. Additionally, Orange received a further $357,600 for non-compliance with pricing regulations.
Debt Recovery Plans
In April, TRB announced a plan to recover over $52 million in outstanding license fees and penalties. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and enhance competitiveness in the telecommunications sector.
The fines imposed by TRB on MTN and Orange highlight the importance of maintaining service quality standards and protecting consumer rights within Cameroon’s rapidly evolving digital sector.
