MTN has announced a new billing model for USSD services that will not involve extra charges for airtime purchases. This system aims to enhance user financial management.
Announcement of the New Billing Model
MTN's Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Lynda Saint Nwafor, stated that the new USSD billing model will not include charges for purchasing airtime or data. "I must emphasize that we have zero-rated access for persons to buy airtime to their bank account," she highlighted.
Historical Context and Key Issues
Gbenga Adebayo, President of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, noted that USSD was originally charged at a rate akin to SMS to expand financial accessibility. He also mentioned the debt issues between banks and telecom operators, which reached over 42.5 billion naira by 2024. "The cycle of conflict led to trust issues between banks and us," Adebayo explained.
Updates on Current Debt Status
Adebayo provided an update on the current USSD service debt, which has now been cleared to 95%. Only three banks have yet to settle their debts. He also reported a successful migration of GT Bank to the new billing system. "We are happy and thankful that some banks have fulfilled their obligations, and we have migrated the first major bank to end-user billing," he concluded.
In conclusion, MTN's new USSD billing model introduces changes that should make banking services more accessible to users without additional costs. Restoring trust among market players is pivotal for improving financial services in Nigeria.
