According to the latest Ookla Speedtest Intelligence report, MTN Nigeria achieved the highest download and upload speeds among operators in West and Central Africa. The download speed reached 95.62 Mbit/s, and the upload speed was 17.01 Mbit/s, significantly beating other subsidiaries like MTN Ghana.
Overall Growth of Subsidiaries
The Ookla report noted that all MTN subsidiaries reviewed from Q2 2022 to Q2 2024 improved their performance. Nigeria and Ghana showed the most advancement. Other companies, such as MTN Benin and MTN Cameroon, also demonstrated significant increases in download speeds between 2023 and 2024.
Economic Challenges for MTN Nigeria
Despite its achievements, MTN Nigeria faces economic challenges. In the first nine months of 2024, the company reported a loss of 514 billion naira due to forex fluctuations. The CEO, Karl Toriola, emphasized the need to raise tariffs on voice and data services for the company's survival.
Despite economic hardships, MTN Nigeria remains the leader in internet speed in the region due to its innovative technologies.
