Beginning of the Data Breach Investigation
The NDPC announced the launch of an investigation into TikTok and Truecaller to verify their compliance with data protection norms. This is part of NDPC's efforts to enforce Nigeria's Data Protection Act. The commission's Director, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, stated that the companies' compliance with data protection laws would be thoroughly examined.
TikTok's Response
TikTok has stated its willingness to cooperate with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to demonstrate its commitment to user data protection. The platform's Head of Communications for the Sub-Saharan region emphasized that safeguarding user data is a top priority for the company.
New Data Protection Directive in Nigeria
The NDPC also introduced a new directive - the Nigeria Data Protection Act: General Application and Implementation Directive, scheduled to come into effect in September 2025. The directive aims to protect data and provides crucial guidelines for compliance.
