The Russian government is developing new rules for crypto miners, including tougher penalties and the possibility of remote shutdowns.
New Rules for Miners
The Ministry of Energy in Russia has been tasked with finalizing regulations for those involved in cryptocurrency mining. Reports indicate that the updates will introduce greater liability for illegal connections to power distribution networks and electricity theft.
Remote Disconnection of Mining Farms
One of the key measures proposed is the capability to remotely disconnect mining facilities from the grid during periods of high electricity demand. The government explained this as a way to introduce restrictions on consumption during energy shortages.
Other Proposed Measures
Additionally, the meeting discussed mandatory labeling and certification for foreign mining equipment imported into Russia and the establishment of a special registry for devices used for digital minting. It was noted that less than a third of mining enterprises are registered with tax authorities.
Final versions of the new rules are expected to be prepared by the end of the current quarter, after which implementation in regions with active mining restrictions will begin.
