The new model for USSD transaction charges in Nigeria is drawing attention from users and telecom operators. Industry leaders discussed the changes in a media chat.
Overview of New Billing Model
The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engineer Gbenga Adebayo, confirmed that telecom operators will ensure seamless USSD transactions under the new billing model. All users will now pay a fixed fee of N6.98 per session (120 seconds) using their airtime instead of a direct bank debit. This system is designed to enhance efficiency and clarity in transaction messaging.
Issues with Double Billing
Adebayo noted potential cases where users might encounter double billing if both their service provider and bank impose charges. 'If customers see a deduction from their bank account alongside a charge for using telecommunications services, they should approach the bank for a refund,' he emphasized.
Regulatory Measures and Transparency Management
Lynda Saint Nwafor, MTN’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, added that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) require operators to ensure that the new billing model addresses trust issues and promotes transparency in the billing process. Operators are mandated to provide monthly performance reports on the service for better monitoring and customer education concerning potential issues.
The new USSD billing system in Nigeria indicates significant changes in payment methods and transaction management. These measures aim to enhance transparency and reduce discrepancies in billing for users.
