Recently, NFT projects have become victims of hacking attacks organized by North Korean groups. The Chainsaw platform and other companies suffered from the actions of intruders who managed to penetrate their systems.
Attack on Chainsaw Platform
The attack on the Chainsaw platform occurred after the company hired a hacker disguised as an IT specialist. Inside the system, the intruder was able to gain control of the minting contract for the 'Replicandy' collection, resulting in immediate financial damage.
Financial Losses and Consequences
In the following five days, three additional collections were compromised, leading to total damages of approximately $310,000. The Favrr project, which fell victim to a similar attack, incurred a loss of $680,000 after also hiring a fake candidate for the chief technology officer position.
Safety Warnings in the NFT World
A study conducted by blockchain analyst ZachXBT highlighted alarming trends related to the use of deception to bypass internal security. Methods typical of North Korean groups, such as the use of fake identities, have been identified.
Attacks on NFT projects serve as a reminder of the need to pay attention to security and conduct thorough vetting of candidates when hiring. Analysts warn that as the NFT market grows, projects must take more serious measures to protect against such threats.
