Nigeria arraigns Binance executive for money laundering and tax evasion

Apr 4, 2024

The Government of Nigeria recently arraigned Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, at an Abuja court on charges of tax evasion and money laundering. Gambaryan, along with Nadeem Anjarwalla, was charged by the Federal Inland Revenue Service for tax-related offenses. The charges included non-payment of value-added tax, company income tax, failure to file tax returns, and assisting customers in evading taxes through the Binance platform. The government also accused Binance of failure to register for tax purposes and violating existing tax regulations. A significant aspect of the case involved failures by Binance to collect and remit specific tax categories as required by law. Gambaryan was served with a $35 million money laundering charge during a court appearance and will be arraigned formally on April 8 and 19 for money laundering and tax charges, respectively. The company responded by asserting that Gambaryan did not have decision-making authority and requested his release. An incident involving the escape of one of the detained executives, Nadeem Anjarwalla, has also been reported.
