The Ministry of Works and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy of Nigeria have formed a Joint Committee to protect fiber optic cables. This initiative addresses the problem of cable damage during road works, negatively affecting telecommunications services nationwide.
Establishment of the New Committee
The Joint Committee on Protection of Fiber Optic Cables was inaugurated on February 18 at the Ministry of Works' boardroom, led by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi, and his counterpart from the Ministry of Communications, Engr. Farouk Yusuf. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, was also present at the meeting.
Committee's Tasks and Plans
The committee is tasked with establishing and maintaining coordination channels between the ministries and the NCC to minimize and prevent damage to fiber optic cables during road construction activities. Engr. Adebiyi directed the committee to implement measures to reduce damage caused by road works as well as vandalism. The committee will meet regularly to discuss issues, develop solutions, and provide monthly performance reports.
Significance and Future Aspirations
Engr. Yusuf highlighted the importance of fiber optic cables for the nation's economy, noting that they are the backbone of Nigeria's digital economy, enabling seamless delivery of both fixed and mobile broadband services. With numerous incidents of cable damage due to road construction, the establishment of the committee is a significant step towards improvement.
The formation of the Joint Committee for the protection of fiber optic cables demonstrates a commitment to improving Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure. This will not only benefit the industry but also citizens, by minimizing service disruptions.
