The Nigerian House of Representatives is intensifying pressure on the NIMC's director over the refusal to pay for a software project by Truid Limited.
Background of the Conflict
Truid Limited filed a complaint with parliament, claiming it developed and deployed a tokenization system for NIMC without any financial obligation from the commission in 2021. In return, Truid was to receive a share of the revenue generated by the deployed software. However, the commission's new director canceled the agreement.
Statements from Parties
According to Chook Oko, Media Head of the Public Petitions Committee, the NIMC director has repeatedly failed to appear for hearings despite several invitations. The committee threatens an arrest should she fail to attend the next meeting. Committee Chairman Mike Etaba expresses dissatisfaction with the director's absence and demands her presence.
NIMC's Identity Management Achievements
Recently, NIMC launched a multipurpose national ID card, collaborating with Nigerian banks to streamline card acquisition. The new card offers both identification and financial transaction capabilities, integrating biometric verification for security.
The standoff between NIMC and Truid Limited remains tense, while identity management and financial inclusion initiatives present new challenges for the commission.
