The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has released the June 2025 National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment figures, reporting a total of 121.4 million registered individuals.
General Overview of NIN Registration
According to the NIMC report, 7 million new registrations were recorded in the first half of 2025, reflecting the agency's goal of registering 85% of Nigeria's population by December 2025. However, NIMC still needs to enroll another 67 million citizens, as the total population of the country is estimated to be over 220 million.
Statistical Analysis by States
Data reveals that 10 states (Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo, Katsina, Abuja, Rivers, Delta, and Jigawa) account for 59 million enrollments, representing 48.62% of the total. Lagos leads with almost 13 million enrollments, translating to 10.60% of the overall count. Interestingly, Bayelsa state recorded the least enrollees at only 791,563, which corresponds to 0.67% of the total.
Issues and NIMC Initiatives
Low NIN enrollment figures are attributed to various factors, including limited awareness and access to enrollment centers, especially in rural and impoverished areas. NIMC is working to address these challenges by collaborating with the National Youth Service Corps to enhance accessibility. Instances of extortion and unethical practices during registration have also been reported.
Despite achievements in enrollment statistics, significant challenges remain that must be addressed to meet NIMC’s registration goals. Continued collaboration with local bodies and increasing public awareness will be critical in this process.
