Today, the crypto exchange Nobitex announced a major security incident, claiming it lost over $48 million due to a suspected hacking group.
Details of the Hack
According to Onchain Labs, the hack involved illicit withdrawals from one of Nobitex's hot wallets on the Tron blockchain network. The incident was detected at 06:24 UTC, prompting an immediate shutdown of the exchange's website and app.
Nobitex's Response
The Nobitex team confirmed the incident in a post, mentioning signs of unauthorized access to their infrastructure. They stated, "We want to remind you that users’ assets are completely secure according to cold storage standards, and the above incident only affected a portion of the assets in hot wallets."
Context of Cyber Attacks
This incident underscores growing concerns about the security of digital infrastructure in Iran. Furthermore, Onchain Labs noted that the group 'Gonjeshke Darande' had recently claimed responsibility for disabling 70% of Iran’s gas stations and targeting Bank Sepah, suggesting a coordinated attack against Iranian infrastructure amid escalating regional tensions.
The Nobitex incident is a significant event raising questions about cybersecurity in the region. The exchange has promised to compensate users for their losses through the insurance fund and company resources.
