Open Access Data Centers (OADC) is set to invest $240 million in expanding its data center in Lekki, Lagos, as part of its infrastructure development plan in Africa.
Developing Data Infrastructure in Lekki
OADC, a subsidiary of the WIOCC Group, is starting to expand its data center in Lekki, Lagos, with a $240 million investment. This plan is part of a broader $500 million investment program announced in 2021 to develop data center infrastructure across Africa. The center's capacity is planned to increase to 24 megawatts by 2027 and serve as the landing station for Google's Equiano subsea cable in Nigeria.
OADC's Environmental and Energy Strategy
The financing is structured as sustainability-linked debt, with a focus on improving the energy efficiency of data centers and securing EDGE certification. OADC plans to integrate renewable energy sources, including solar and hydroelectric power, already used in South Africa. The company is exploring gas-based energy solutions to reduce reliance on diesel generators.
Future Expansion and Strategy of OADC in Africa
The company plans further expansion in Nigeria and other African markets such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. OADC sees itself as a key player in Africa's growing data center market. The company already operates data centers in Lagos, Kinshasa, and in four cities across South Africa.
OADC's expansion in Lekki supports Nigeria's digital infrastructure and meets the growing demand for cloud services and improved internet access in Africa.
