OpenAI has banned ChatGPT accounts linked to an Iranian influence operation posting materials about the US elections.
OpenAI Responds to Threats
Previously, state actors used Facebook and Twitter to spread disinformation, but have now started using generative AI. In response to these threats, OpenAI quickly blocks discovered accounts, which is crucial as the 2024 US presidential election approaches.
Storm-2035 and Its Objectives
OpenAI's analysis, based on a report by Microsoft Threat Intelligence, points to the Storm-2035 group, which has been interfering in US elections since 2020. This Iranian network mimics genuine news sites, posting content on topics like presidential candidates, LGBTQ rights, and the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Using ChatGPT to Generate Polarizing Content
Storm-2035's goal is not to support a specific policy but to create division. The group managed five websites posing as both liberal and conservative news portals, using ChatGPT to write articles. One such article claimed that the social network X was blocking Donald Trump's tweets.
OpenAI continues to counter attempts at the misuse of its technology for political interference.
