Ethereum has announced the timeline for its next major upgrade named Pectra, aimed at substantially enhancing the blockchain's speed and efficiency.
Key Features of Pectra
The Pectra upgrade includes eight significant improvements or 'Ethereum improvement proposals' (EIPs). One of the most notable upgrades, EIP-7702, is expected to enhance the user experience by allowing wallets to be programmable like smart contracts. Another major upgrade, EIP-7251, will increase the maximum validator stake from 32 to 2,048 ETH, simplifying the staking process for network participants.
Developers' Planning History
Pectra was set to be Ethereum's largest hard fork to date, but some elements were stripped down from early plans. In September, developers decided that the original plans for Pectra were too ambitious, agreeing to split the update package into two parts.
Experimental Testing on Test Networks
Developers plan to test Pectra on Ethereum's Sepolia and Holesky test networks throughout February. If successful, the update will be implemented on the mainnet in early or mid-March.
The Pectra upgrade promises multiple enhancements for the Ethereum network. It aims to address existing user issues, increasing the platform's convenience and performance.
