Pi Network has announced an update to its account verification and mainnet migration. The mobile mining platform is moving from phone number-based to email-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to enhance security and improve user experience.
The Challenges of Phone Number Verification
Since its inception, Pi Network has relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier for user accounts. However, this approach has faced challenges over time. SMS verification has proven unreliable and expensive, especially for a platform with users worldwide. Pi Network has over 60 million users globally.
Why Email-Based 2FA?
Pi Network is shifting to email-based 2FA verification to address logistical challenges of SMS and enhance security. Two-factor authentication requires users to verify their identity through a code sent to their email, making unauthorized account access more difficult.
The Road to Implementation
Implementing this shift was not without challenges. Emails were optional for Pi users at account creation, leading to some not adding, incorrectly entering, or losing access to their emails. To ensure the integrity of the new system, Pi Network conducts extensive analytics and system-level checks.
The transition to email-based 2FA marks a significant step in Pi Network's mission to create a secure, accessible, and globally inclusive cryptocurrency ecosystem. By addressing SMS verification limitations and adopting two-factor authentication, Pi sets a new security standard.
