Pi Network has announced a significant update to its account verification system, moving to email authentication and two-factor authentication. This decision aims to enhance security and improve user experience.
Challenges of Phone Number Verification
Since its inception, Pi Network has relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier for user accounts. However, this approach has faced growing difficulties as SMS verification has proven unreliable and costly for a globally distributed user base. According to Pi Network’s official blog, limitations associated with differences in telecommunication policies and regulations led to failures in message delivery for users.
*“Due to the global distributed nature of the Pi community, SMS communications between Pioneers and servers have not always worked due to different geographic limitations in telecommunication regulations, carrier policies, and more,”* the blog noted.
Benefits of Switching to Email-Based 2FA
In response to these issues, Pi Network is transitioning to an email-based two-factor authentication (2FA) system. This step not only addresses the logistical challenges of SMS but also enhances security, requiring users to verify their identity through an additional step. The move towards email authentication aims not only to improve security but also to incorporate more advanced authentication methods in the future.
*“The email-based 2FA verification not only addresses the above challenges, but also improves security because of the two-factor aspect,”* the Pi blog explains.
Implementation Process and Future Updates
Implementing this new authentication system required significant efforts. At the time of account creation, users did not always have email addresses linked, creating additional complexities. The transition to the new system necessitates the confirmation of email addresses, which may involve extra steps for users. Following extensive analytics and system checks, the migration process has resumed.
*“The good news is that migrations have now resumed and will gradually expand as more email-based 2FAs and system-level checks complete,”* the blog states.
The shift to email-based 2FA in Pi Network marks a crucial step in creating a secure and accessible cryptocurrency ecosystem. As migrations continue and new features are implemented, the network reaffirms its commitment to account security and reliability.
