Pi Network has announced changes to its account verification system, transitioning to email-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This measure aims to enhance security and improve user experience.

The Challenges of Phone Number Verification

Since its inception, Pi Network has used phone numbers as the primary identifier for user accounts. Over time, this method faced significant challenges. SMS verification proved unreliable and costly, particularly for a platform with over 60 million users worldwide. Variations in telecommunication regulations, carrier policies, and individual service subscriptions led to inconsistent delivery of verification messages. Additionally, the costs associated with SMS communications became a burden for both users and the network.

Due to the global distributed nature of the Pi community, SMS communications between Pioneers and servers did not always work due to geographic limitations.

Advantages of Email-Based 2FA

In response to these issues, Pi Network is shifting to email-based 2FA verification. This approach addresses the logistical challenges of SMS and offers a higher level of security. Two-factor authentication requires users to verify their identity through an additional step, usually a code sent to their email, making access to accounts harder for unauthorized parties. This measure aligns with Pi Network's future plans to adopt advanced authentication methods.

The email-based 2FA verification not only addresses the above challenges but also improves security because of the two-factor aspect.

Implementation Path and Upcoming Changes

Implementing email-based verification was not easy. At account creation, emails were not mandatory for many users, requiring a careful approach to ensure the integrity of the new system. Before rolling out the change, Pi Network conducted extensive analytics and system checks. Migration has resumed, allowing users to transition to the email-based 2FA system. The Pi Network team has urged patience during the phased rollout, underscoring the priority of security.

The good news is that migrations have now resumed and will gradually expand as more email-based 2FAs and system-level checks complete.

Pi Network's transition to email-based 2FA verification is a significant step towards creating a secure and accessible cryptocurrency ecosystem. By addressing SMS verification issues and embracing two-factor authentication, Pi sets a new standard for account security, demonstrating a commitment to security and reliability in the best interests of its users.
