Polygon's Discord community channel has been hacked, raising concerns among users.
Hack Confirmation
Mudit Gupta, the Chief Information Security Officer at Polygon, confirmed the breach and advised users not to click any links shared in the channel until the situation is resolved.
User Reactions
Several users quickly took to social media to alert others about the scam. According to some, the scammers were pretending to be support agents to trick those looking for help. One user, ValidatorK, reported losing $150,000 worth of Ether (ETH) after clicking what seemed like an official announcement on the compromised Discord server.
Previous Attacks and Future Plans
This is not the first time a Discord server related to cryptocurrency has been hacked. Earlier this year, the Arbitrum Discord was hit by a phishing scam, and in May, the Gnus.AI platform lost about $1.27 million due to a similar attack. These hacks usually involve fake announcements sent from compromised accounts, leading to significant losses for users. Moreover, the timing of this breach is especially troubling for Polygon, as the platform is gearing up for a major network upgrade on September 4, which will see MATIC tokens replaced by POL tokens intended to enhance Polygon’s growing network of blockchains.
The Discord channel hack underscores the importance of cybersecurity in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, especially ahead of major updates.
