The Russian government has imposed a six-year ban on crypto mining in 10 regions across the country. The main reason for this action is to address energy challenges.
Details of the Ban
Starting from January 1, 2025, a total ban on crypto mining will be enforced in 10 regions of the Russian Federation. These regions include Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as Zaporizhia and Kherson.
Legislative Details
According to TASS, the ban will be effective for six years starting in 2025. In addition to the total ban, seasonal restrictions will be imposed in major mining areas to prevent power grid overloads.
Temporary Restrictions in Other Regions
Additionally, temporary bans have been imposed in the Irkutsk Region, Buryatia, and Zabaikalsky Krai, with restrictions during peak energy consumption from January 1 to March 15, 2025, and from November 15 to March 15 in subsequent years.
The measures taken by the government are aimed at reducing the energy grid load in regions where cryptocurrency mining significantly affects electricity consumption. The temporary and permanent bans act as a precautionary measure to ensure stability in energy supply.
