U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has spoken about how artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics should benefit workers rather than just corporate leaders.
Challenges of AI for Workers
Sanders highlighted that workers are increasingly concerned that AI is replacing them in the workplace. According to research, 90% of employers plan to utilize AI-driven solutions in the next five years. Additionally, over 52% of professionals express fear over the impact of AI on their careers. Sanders asserts that technology should improve workers' lives and offer them more flexible working conditions. "Let's use technology to benefit workers," Sanders stated.
Successful Examples of AI Adoption
Sanders provided examples of companies that have implemented a shorter workweek with the help of AI. In the UK, 61 companies tested a four-day workweek, with 19 out of 23 companies reporting sales growth. Additionally, Kickstarter and Microsoft Japan successfully applied a four-day workweek, increasing their productivity by 40%.
The Future of AI and Its Economic Impact
The adoption of AI is projected to grow at a rate of 20% per year, with analysts predicting the global AI market will exceed $240 billion. Goldman Sachs forecasts AI will add 15% to the world's GDP over the next decade, while J.P. Morgan holds a more pessimistic view, estimating an increase of 8-9%. Economist Daron Acemoglu predicts a growth contribution of only 1-1.5%.
The discussion on workers' rights in the context of the increasing impact of technology on labor processes becomes increasingly relevant, underscoring the importance of a responsible approach to AI utilization.
