Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, has issued a warning about scammers impersonating support to steal users' personal information.
New Scams
The crypto exchange Binance has reported that bad actors are impersonating its support team to trick clients into providing personal data or scanning malicious QR codes. The alert states, "Scammers pretend to be 'Binance support' and ask for a face video to 'verify' your account. Their ultimate goal is to access your funds, bypassing Binance’s real verification systems using stolen data. Criminals send QR codes via WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook, claiming they’re for 'rewards' or 'updates.' Scanning these codes logs them into your Binance account instantly."
Other Recent Threats
Binance claims to have surpassed 275 million registered users, which may explain why its community is a frequent target for wrongdoers. Earlier this year, some users reported falling victim to an SMS spoofing attack where they received messages appearing to be from Binance asking to set up a dubious wallet. Consequently, those who transferred assets there had their funds stolen.
Importance of User Vigilance
Binance's CEO Richard Teng also warned about phishing scams targeting the exchange’s client base. He noted that while the team is available around the clock, people’s vigilance remains 'the first line of defense.'
As these fraudulent schemes become more sophisticated, users need to be vigilant and rely only on official Binance channels.
