In February 2025, blockchain gaming activity on some L2 blockchains surged significantly, despite an overall decline in active wallets.
Rapid Growth on L2 Blockchains
According to a DappRadar report, L2 blockchain gaming activity increased by over 20,000% in February 2025, while the number of daily unique active wallets (dUAWs) declined. The Abstract blockchain, developed by Igloo, led all chains with over 20,000% growth. Sony's Soneium followed with a 3,200% rise, and Linea placed third with over 1,000% growth.
Key Growth Drivers
On Abstract and Soneium, the primary drivers of activity growth were the games Treasure Ship and Evermoon. Despite the increase in gaming activity, the overall dUAWs dropped by 16% to 5.8 million wallets. While blockchain gaming remains strong, investor focus has shifted towards DeFi.
Challenges and Prospects
Despite growth, the sector faces challenges. Theodore Agranat, Web3 director at Gunzilla Games, noted that no new money is entering the system, with existing capital being recycled among projects. This raises questions about the sustainability of current business strategies.
Blockchain gaming is showing significant growth in 2025, yet the industry faces challenges such as capital redistribution and shifting investor priorities.
