SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is considering creating an industrial complex in Arizona with an investment of $1 trillion to develop AI and robotics technologies.
Project Crystal Land
The project, dubbed Crystal Land, is reported to be in its early stages. Son has stated he is unsure of TSMC's role in the project despite SoftBank's desire to collaborate with the firm. He drew comparisons between the plans and China's Shenzhen manufacturing hub that could bring high-tech manufacturing back to the U.S.
Interest from TSMC
Son is also gauging interest from tech companies, including Samsung Electronics. SoftBank is expected to negotiate with U.S. government officials regarding possible tax breaks for companies building factories or otherwise investing in the industrial park. The current plans depend on support from the administration and local officials.
More on Semiconductor Manufacturing in the U.S.
Son emphasized that the commitment of $1 trillion is part of a broader strategy aimed at revitalizing semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. However, achieving complete self-sufficiency in this area is challenging or even impossible. While the U.S. was once the center of microchip development, it now manufactures only 10% of the world's semiconductors.
SoftBank's project in Arizona underscores the growing interest in restoring technology manufacturing to the U.S., aiming to strengthen the industry and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
