At CES 2025, Sony unveiled a new approach to immersive gaming technology that allows players to experience scents from games in real life.
Sony's Immersive Future
At CES 2025, Sony presented its latest leap in immersive gaming technology: a system enabling players to experience in-game scents in real-time. This concept, called the 'Future Immersive Entertainment Concept' (FIEC), was showcased using the popular title The Last of Us, captivating attendees with its sensory-forward approach. The CES showcase featured a large cube made of high-definition Crystal LED panels, immersing participants in the game world visually and sensorily.
Future of The Last of Us Series
The Last of Us series by Naughty Dog consists of two installments and several downloadable contents. The Last of Us Part II was the franchise's latest major installment. Initially, a multiplayer spinoff titled The Last of Us Online was in development, but the project was since abandoned in favor of other projects, including a new sci-fi title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Set thousands of years in the future, the game follows Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter on the planet Sempiria. The Last of Us remains significant for Sony, with remastered versions available for PlayStation 5.
Hyperkin's DualSense-Inspired Controller for Xbox
Hyperkin announced a new controller for Xbox and PC, inspired by Sony's DualSense design. Named the Competitor, it features symmetrical analog stick layout, transparent buttons, and ergonomic design. The controller will be available in a sleek black model and a white-faced variant with two-tone aesthetics. While resembling DualSense, Competitor lacks adaptive triggers and dynamic vibrations. However, Hyperkin offers Xbox and PC users a premium design.
Sony continues to advance immersive technology, and the new developments presented at CES 2025 promise to expand gaming industry frontiers. The integration of scents and other sensory elements heralds a new era in gaming experience.
