South African President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke with popular tech figure Elon Musk to discuss misinformation about South Africa. A statement by the presidency on X confirmed the phone call.
Conversation with Elon Musk
According to the presidency's statement, Ramaphosa and Musk talked about 'issues of misinformation and distortions' regarding South Africa. The conversation reiterated South Africa's constitutionally embedded values of respect for the rule of law, justice, and equality.
Context of the US Conflict
The discussion comes after US President Donald Trump's threat to suspend aid over South Africa's land reform policy. Trump accused South Africa of land confiscation and mistreatment of 'certain classes of people.' Ramaphosa countered, stating that their policy aims to ensure equitable public land access and that no land was confiscated.
Starlink Negotiations
Five months ago, talks between the South African government and Musk's company Starlink were held to discuss launching satellite services in the country. Yet, due to BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) requirements for ownership distribution, the project has stalled. Additionally, regulatory steps for licensing from South African authorities have yet to progress.
Hence, despite active negotiations and a desire to improve technological accessibility in South Africa, unresolved regulatory and political requirements continue to delay the project.
