Crypto derivatives trading platform Deribit has warned of new scam schemes targeting crypto professionals using fake LinkedIn profiles.
New fraud schemes in crypto industry
Deribit's Chief Information Security Officer, Anthony Sweeney, reported that scammers are posing as recruiters from reputable companies, offering high-paying job opportunities. These tactics could soon spread beyond the crypto industry as fraudsters refine their methods.
Fraudsters' methods
Fake recruiters create fraudulent LinkedIn profiles, posting job advertisements for lucrative roles. Candidates are invited to take an 'online assessment' which installs malware on their devices. Other methods include fake online interviews and offering bogus work conditions with perks like discounted company shares, requiring payments. Fraudulent meetings are arranged at non-existent company offices, such as a 'Deribit office in Los Angeles', which does not exist.
Safety advice
Sweeney advises verifying LinkedIn profiles for inconsistencies and validating recruiters' identities through official HR channels to avoid scam interactions.
With threats on the rise, it's vital to remain vigilant when engaging with online recruiters. Thorough information checks can prevent falling prey to fraud.
