Rainforest Foundation US has announced the creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve to support rainforest conservation and Indigenous communities in South America.
The Idea of a Bitcoin Treasury
Rainforest Foundation US Executive Director Suzanne Pelletier discussed the plans to raise 100 BTC in the podcast 'The Agenda,' aiming to sustainably fund its budget amidst inflation. 'With inflation and dollar debasement, the money people donate is losing value. Inspired by companies like MicroStrategy, we decided to create a similar reserve in the nonprofit sector.'
Social Impact Through Cryptocurrencies
Unlike other Bitcoin reserves, the collected funds will be used for various initiatives in South America, including Indigenous territorial monitoring. For instance, 0.0015 BTC provides monitoring of 50 acres to prevent deforestation.
Involvement of Local Communities
Pelletier emphasized that all the foundation's work is done in partnership with Indigenous peoples, co-creating projects without imposing agendas and ensuring full engagement of Indigenous partners.
Rainforest Foundation US's initiative to create a Bitcoin treasury exemplifies a new model of sustainable funding, aligning cryptocurrency trends with ecological protection.
