Ripple has successfully concluded its drought insurance pilot in Kenya, providing financial protection for pastoral communities using digital currency.
Success of the Diva Campaign
The partnership with the Diva Campaign was announced in March and has now concluded successfully. Pastoral communities in Laikipia North utilized Ripple's stablecoin RLUSD and Ethereum for coverage and potential payouts, demonstrating their applicability in humanitarian aid.
Ripple's Support in Vegetation Monitoring
Over the past decade, Kenya has experienced severe droughts that have destroyed livestock and put pastoral communities at risk of starvation. However, this year, with the collaboration with the Diva Campaign, this hazard was successfully avoided. Satellite data was used to monitor vegetation health, serving as an objective basis for insurance payouts.
Potential of Blockchain Technology
For the next high-risk drought season in Kenya (October to December 2025), 517 pastoralists remain insured and protected with the unused RLUSD. This data demonstrates the potential use of blockchain-based insurance solutions to protect pastoralists from climate risks.
Ripple's drought insurance pilot in Kenya illustrates how digital assets and satellite technology can provide effective and sustainable drought insurance for vulnerable communities.
