Taiwan is embarking on an initiative to become a global powerhouse in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2040 through the implementation of Ten Major AI Projects that could create over NT$15 trillion in economic value.
Initiative for Ten Major AI Projects
The Taiwanese government has announced its intention to launch an ambitious 'Ten Major AI Projects' initiative, which is projected to generate more than $510 billion in economic benefits. These projects will span various sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education, creating over 500,000 domestic jobs.
Technological Priorities of Taiwan
Taiwan will focus on three key technologies: silicon photonics, quantum computing, and AI robotics. The country aims to integrate chip production with AI applications to take the lead in silicon photonics and establish a complete quantum technology supply chain.
Political Challenges Ahead of 2040 Goals
Despite proactive technology development efforts, Taiwan faces political instability, which could hinder the realization of its 2040 roadmap. Existing parliamentary conflicts may weaken investor confidence in long-term innovation plans, especially in sensitive sectors such as quantum computing and AI robotics.
Taiwan is striving to achieve leading positions in AI by 2040; however, political instability may delay the realization of these ambitious plans.
