Tether has announced the discontinuation of support for its stablecoin USDT on five legacy blockchains, effective September 1, 2025.
Closure of USDT on Legacy Blockchains
As of September 1, 2025, Tether will stop redeeming USDT on the Algorand, Omni, Bitcoin Cash, EOS, and Kusama blockchains. The volumes of USDT on these platforms have dramatically decreased to insignificant levels, shifting focus to more actively used networks like Ethereum and Tron, which now hold the bulk of the $159 billion USDT in circulation.
Strategic Decisions of Tether
This decision is backed by concrete figures: fewer than 250,000 USDT remain on Kusama, and less than a million on Bitcoin Cash. Consequently, Tether is reassessing its strategy to mitigate regulatory risks in the U.S. and Europe. "As the digital asset ecosystem evolves, Tether remains committed to adapting," the company stated.
Market Impact
While Tether pulls support from legacy platforms, competitors like Circle with their USDC are gaining market share. For instance, USDC shows much higher activity on Algorand compared to USDT. This shift is not surprising, given the current market trends.
Thus, Tether is formalizing its shift towards more active and viable blockchains, reflecting the overall trend of market adaptation.
