The Tezos blockchain has concluded the activation of its 17th protocol upgrade named Quebec, aimed at increasing network speed and resilience.

Overview of the Quebec Upgrade

Development teams from Nomadic Labs, Trilitech, and Functori collaborated on the upgrade, which was adopted by validators through an on-chain governance and voting process. Quebec activates several new elements that enhance the Tezos user experience. It is part of the Tezos X roadmap that presents a unified vision for the future of the Tezos network and ecosystem.

Impact on Network and Staking

Quebec introduces several improvements making the network more appealing to developers and organizations of all sizes. It reduced block time from 10 to 8 seconds, improving transaction speed to finality in 16 seconds. The upgrade reinforced Tezos' position as a platform for gaming and payments, retaining consensus participation for validators using low-cost hardware. The Adaptive Issuance mechanism, introduced in the Paris upgrade, is further enhanced in Quebec to prevent excessive tez issuance.

Long-term Prospects for Tezos

The Quebec upgrade raises the maximum external stake a validator can accept, reducing centralization risks. It also decreases the weight of delegated funds to encourage more active staking. Quebec's implementation brings the network closer to Tezos X, showcasing the dedication of the community and developers to long-term innovation. The recent launch of uranium.io marketplace on Etherlink highlights the vibrant activity within the Tezos ecosystem.

The successful activation of Quebec is a significant step towards enhancing the resilience and performance of the Tezos network. It underscores the protocol's ability to evolve, adapting to modern demands while remaining decentralized.
