Former National Crime Agency (NCA) officer Paul Chowles was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison for stealing 50 Bitcoin (BTC) during a crackdown on dark web illicit activities involving Silk Road.
Arrest of Paul Chowles
42-year-old Paul Chowles worked with the NCA and cooperated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to combat organized crime on Silk Road in 2013. In May 2025, he admitted to stealing BTC now valued at £4.4 million.
BTC Theft and Its Implications
In 2014, investigators continued their probe that uncovered Silk Road 2.0, set up by Thomas White. Chowles transferred 50 BTC out of 97 BTC seized from White to another address in 2017. The funds were split into smaller sums and laundered through the mixer Bitcoin Fog.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation by Merseyside Police revealed that Chowles likely had access to the missing Bitcoins due to his position in the NCA. Records and details found in his possession linked him to the theft. Eventually, Chowles was arrested, and on July 16, 2025, he was sentenced.
Paul Chowles's case underscores the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies and strict oversight of seized assets.
