TikTok has announced a new feature called 'Footnotes' that allows users to add context to videos to enhance understanding of content.
Description of 'Footnotes' Feature
The 'Footnotes' feature on TikTok allows users to add relevant information to videos to help others better understand the content. It leverages the collective knowledge of the TikTok community. As TikTok's Head of Operations Adam Presser noted, 'Today we are announcing the test of Footnotes, a new feature that will give our community more context about content on TikTok.'
Participation Process for Users
Currently, U.S. users can apply to become Footnotes contributors. Eligible users must be at least 18 years old, have an account for more than six months, and maintain a clean record with no recent community guidelines violations. Presser stated, 'We will also notify users who meet our eligibility requirements. Once admitted, contributors can add footnotes to videos and rate those left by others.'
Strategy Against Misinformation
'Footnotes' is part of a broader strategy by TikTok to combat misinformation. The platform already uses labels for content that cannot be independently verified and collaborates with over 20 accredited fact-checking organizations. Presser added that 'Footnotes provides new ways to add helpful details that may be missing, ultimately enriching discussions on TikTok and improving the experience for viewers and contributors alike.'
'Footnotes' showcases TikTok's commitment to improving information quality on the platform and enhancing user interactions, amidst ongoing regulatory challenges.
