Popular video content platform TikTok has launched the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) feed in Sub-Saharan Africa, offering users vetted content in these fields.
STEM as an Educational Platform
Unveiled in November 2024, the STEM feed is currently available in over 20 countries. It offers users the ability to explore a world of knowledge by interacting with respected experts. Since 2025, 25% of teens in the UK, Ireland, the US, and Canada visit the STEM feed weekly. TikTok plans to make the feed available globally and include other languages like French, German, and Spanish.
New Initiative for Youth
Educational communities thrive across TikTok. The launch of the STEM feed has increased STEM-related content by 18%. Nearly 10 million STEM-related videos have been published globally in the last three years. The video content is evaluated by Common Sense Networks and The Poynter Institute for Media Studies for age appropriateness and reliability.
Content Creators on TikTok
Nigerian educator Aisha Bande and South African teacher Mpho T. Makhema are among the content creators whose materials are popular. They strive to make educational content accessible and enjoyable. Videos on the STEM feed cover a wide range of topics, from astrophysics to technology.
The launch of the STEM feed on TikTok provides users with a new space for educational content, reinforcing the platform as a place for learning and exploration.
