U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he expects to reach a trade deal with the European Union during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Expected Agreement with EU
Trump expressed confidence that "there’ll be a trade deal," but noted he is not in a rush to finalize it. He stated that agreements would be made "at a certain point" and emphasized that the U.S. is not hurrying.
Italian Priorities in Negotiations
Meloni highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as defense, space, and energy, stressing the need to increase LNG imports. She confirmed her intention to negotiate with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Support for Security and Defense
Trump urged European allies to increase their defense spending, noting that Italy aims for a 2% GDP commitment. Meloni promised to push for higher defense budgets among EU member states.
The negotiations between the U.S. and European Union are becoming increasingly relevant as prospects for a trade agreement and the need for increased military spending in Europe arise.
