President Trump's administration is taking active steps against Harvard University, threatening to revoke its tax exemptions and alter student programs.
Threats to Tax Exemptions
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in an interview that President Trump is now actively moving to strip Harvard University of its tax-exempt status. Bessent noted that the university may have violated the rules necessary to maintain these privileges. Bessent said, "We will see if they are following the rules."
Issues with International Students
Recently, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that Harvard would lose its Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. This statement, unbacked by public evidence, accuses the university of fostering violence and antisemitism. A US District Judge temporarily blocked a Trump administration order that could prevent Harvard from enrolling foreign students.
Financial Concerns and Urgent Reforms
Scott also criticized Harvard's massive $53 billion endowment, stating that the university operates like a "giant hedge fund." Recent legislation targeting wealthy schools in the House of Representatives proposes higher taxes on their investment income.
Despite pressure from the Trump administration, Harvard continues to fight for its rights in court, emphasizing the importance of international students to its community.
