Former US President Donald Trump has granted full pardons to several figures involved in the BitMEX case as well as other individuals related to high-profile criminal cases.
Pardon for BitMEX
Donald Trump issued a full pardon to Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed, who had previously pleaded guilty to violations related to the operation of cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX without compliance with anti-money laundering protocols. This announcement came just over three months after the exchange was fined $100 million for violating US law.
Delos, Reed, and Hayes
Arthur Hayes, the former CEO of BitMEX, was sentenced to six months of home confinement followed by two years of probation. Benjamin Delo, who was the chief operating and strategy officer, received 30 months of probation, and Samuel Reed, the chief technology officer, received 18 months of probation. The trio was also fined $30 million in civil penalties.
Other Trump Pardons
In addition to the BitMEX figures, Trump also pardoned Trevor Milton and Ross Ulbricht. Milton was the founder and former CEO of Nikola and was convicted of securities fraud, while Ulbricht received two life sentences for creating the Silk Road platform.
The pardons granted by Trump have sparked widespread discussion and debate, especially concerning the previous cases of money laundering involving BitMEX and increasing regulatory scrutiny of the cryptocurrency sector.
