The U.S. Treasury has frozen eight Tron cryptocurrency addresses linked to Houthi rebels to restrict funding of their operations in the region.
Details of the Sanctions
The Treasury’s Office of Financial Assets Control (OFAC) added these wallets to its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) list. These measures are aimed at curbing their use to fund rebel actions in Yemen.
Houthi Financial Network
The Houthis have used a financial network supported by Sa'id al-Jamal, who was declared a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2021 and sanctioned in 2023 and 2024. Freezing the Tron wallets targets the weakening of his financial backing.
Expanding Crypto Sanctions
Blockchain data shows these sanctioned Tron wallets have existed since 2023. The U.S. continues its crackdown on crypto assets used by terrorist organizations to finance operations, as part of its global anti-terrorism strategy.
By freezing the wallets, the U.S. Treasury aims to cut off critical funding sources for the Houthis and warns other groups of the risks of using cryptocurrencies for illegal activities.
