Uber Go drivers are in a state of panic over reports that Moove, the company financing their Suzuki S-presso vehicles, might increase their weekly payments.
Weekly Payment Increase
Reports indicate that Moove is inviting drivers in batches to inform them about the potential changes. One of the drivers, who attended such a meeting, confirmed that the company's representatives explained the need to increase payments due to rising operational costs. However, the exact new amount has not been disclosed yet. CITE_NA: "I was among the drivers invited to the meeting. The information is true. When the management explained their spending on services and other expenses, the increase seemed justified. The amount hasn't been communicated yet," the driver said.
Moove Drivers' Restrictions
Moove drivers with their Uber Suzuki 'korope' vehicles operate under strict conditions. Firstly, Moove allows its vehicles to operate only on the Uber app, which limits drivers' ability to earn more money, as e-hailing customers use other apps like Bolt and InDrive. Secondly, there’s a geographical restriction that confines drivers to Lagos Island and select parts of the Mainland. CITE_W_A: "In order for us to provide our revenue-based financing products with no upfront deposits, we leverage productivity data from Uber. This is why we require our customers to drive only on Uber," a member of Moove's communications team explained.
Moove Drivers' Protests
Moove drivers have previously protested sudden payment hikes. In February 2023, Moove-Uber Suzuki drivers protested against an increase in the cost of their hire-purchase vehicles from 8 million to 12 million naira. Drivers are also unhappy about the rise in daily payments, which amount to 80% of their average daily income of 18,000 naira. Additionally, they bear expenses for fuel and data purchases, totaling 66,000 naira per week.
At the time of this report, Moove has not issued a statement regarding the potential payment increase. Drivers continue to operate under strict conditions and express concern about their financial future.
