The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned eight crypto wallets linked to the Houthis in Yemen. This decision is part of ongoing efforts to restrict the group's financial activities.
Sanctions Against Houthi Crypto Wallets
According to the official announcement, these wallets, which contain USDT stablecoins on the Tron blockchain, are blacklisted. All U.S.-based crypto exchanges and financial services must block access to them.
Details of the Sanctions
U.S. citizens are barred from dealing with these wallets or any company on OFAC’s sanctions list. This action aims to prevent these wallets from being used to transfer or liquidate assets.
Previous Sanctions and Consequences
The Houthis were officially designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organization by the U.S. on February 16, 2024. Additionally, OFAC has previously sanctioned crypto exchanges and services suspected of facilitating illegal transactions.
The sanctions on Houthi crypto wallets highlight the U.S. efforts to control the use of digital currencies in financing terrorist activities.
