Crypto news platform Watcher Guru has confirmed that its account on social network X was breached by a hacker, resulting in the spread of unauthorized posts across all its channels.
Events and Measures
On March 21, a hacker uploaded an unauthorized post on Watcher Guru's account claiming that SWIFT was close to an agreement with Ripple to use XRP for cross-border payments. The platform's team promptly removed the message, attributed it to the hacker, and is working with X support to prevent such incidents in the future.
How the Breach Happened
The team suspects the hack originated from a fake X link sent to their Telegram account. The link appeared to be an official X link but had an unusual structure. Similarly, another crypto news platform, DB News, was hacked, despite having two-factor authentication enabled.
History of X Account Hacks
In recent years, many accounts on X have been breached, often to promote memecoins. In some cases, hacked accounts were used to spread fake news, as seen with the luxury brand Dior's Instagram account, which was hijacked to promote a counterfeit token that reached a market cap of $280,000 before crashing.
Modern account hacking techniques, including phishing links and social engineering, are becoming increasingly sophisticated despite protective measures such as two-factor authentication. Watcher Guru continues its efforts to identify the source of the breach and prevent similar incidents in the future.
