Westlock County in Canada is planning to revisit its regulations for cryptocurrency firms, which will allow them to build larger facilities in the region.
Changes in the Data Processing Facilities Bylaw
Westlock County is presenting new amendments to the Data Processing Facilities bylaw, following a rise in proposals for high-powered facilities. This initiative was introduced at the council meeting on July 8.
Types of Facilities and Land Use
Under the new proposal, data processing facilities are categorized based on energy consumption. Major facilities, requiring one megawatt or more, will be permitted only in industrial areas. In contrast, minor facilities can be located elsewhere at the discretion of local authorities.
Noise Pollution and Public Hearings
Noise pollution remains a significant concern for residents. Due to this, new amendments require developers to submit a noise mitigation plan, which may include monitoring. Discussions on the new regulations are scheduled for a hearing on September 9.
The revision of regulations in Westlock reflects the region's efforts to adapt to the growing interest in cryptocurrencies while addressing related concerns.
