  4. Elon Musk’s startup, xAI, has launched the latest version of its chatbot, Grok-2. The beta mode of the new AI assistant will be available for paying X users (formerly Twitter).

    Introducing Grok-2

xAI released Grok-2 to the public on August 13, advertising it as an improved version of the Grok 1.5 released in April. The new model comes in two versions: Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini.

    Ratings and Reviews

The latest release is the third iteration of xAI's chatbot since November 2023, when the startup released Grok-1. Independent reviews came back with mixed results in a comparison of Grok-2, ChatGPT-4o, and Gemini 1.5 pro, conducted by Chatbot Arena. Grok-2 matched GPT-4o in coding, maths, and hard prompts but ranked third overall, below GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5. Wharton Professor Ethan Mollick acknowledged Grok-2’s capabilities but noted that no AI models have outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4.

    Features and Capabilities

One notable improvement in the Grok-2 release is the ability to generate images. Users have already started using this feature to create politically themed images. This capability allows Grok-2 to stand alongside other popular AI models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta's Llama. However, concerns arise over the lack of restrictions on Grok-2, which could lead to the creation of images infringing on copyright.

Despite its rapid development, xAI faces challenges such as copyright compliance and security. Currently, Grok-2 is in beta and available to X premium users, with plans for further improvements and feature expansions.
