YouTube is implementing new rules for live streaming, raising the minimum age for streamers from 13 to 16 years starting July 22, 2025.
New Rules for Streamers
According to the updated policies, streamers aged 13 to 15 may only live stream if they are "visibly accompanied by an adult." "Creators need to be 16 or older to be able to livestream on YouTube," the support site states.
Safety for Minors on the Platform
YouTube also reiterated safety guidelines for underage users, including advice not to disclose personal information and appoint adults as moderators for chat interactions. "Parents should monitor content and moderation in chats," the company's materials said.
Under Pressure from Legislators
Just before the new policy was introduced, Australian lawmakers began discussions on the possibility of adding YouTube to the list of social media platforms restricted for users under 16. These discussions were prompted by data indicating that 40% of surveyed children encounter harmful content on the platform.
With the introduction of these new rules, YouTube aims to improve the safety of underage users, although external pressures, such as legislative initiatives, may lead the company to reassess its stance in the future.
