The Hong Kong Police Force's Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) has launched CyberDefender, an innovative metaverse platform designed to raise public awareness regarding the risks and challenges associated with Web3 and the metaverse. CyberDefender Launch

During the virtual event "Exploring the Metaverse," CyberDefender was introduced across three online platforms. The event aimed to foster conversations about combating crime within the metaverse. Mr. Ip Cheuk-yu, the chief inspector of CSTCB, highlighted the significance of practicing caution in the metaverse and encouraged participants to exercise the same level of vigilance as they do when using the internet.

According to Mr. Ip, crimes that are common in the online world, like investment fraud, unauthorized access, theft, and sexual offenses, can also occur within the metaverse. The decentralized nature of virtual assets in Web3 may heighten the possibility of cybercriminals focusing on end-point devices, virtual asset wallets, and smart contracts, which could potentially result in asset theft.

Shifting Attention to the Youthful Generation

The main objective of the educational initiatives of CyberDefender is to primarily target the younger generation and create awareness among them. The Hong Kong Police Force has planned to conduct public education programs using the platform called "CyberDefender Metaverse." The purpose of these programs is to provide teenagers with updated knowledge about information technology, highlight potential risks, and emphasize the importance of preventing technology-related crimes.

During the initial quarter of 2023, the Hong Kong Police Force registered a total of 663 cases related to virtual assets, leading to a cumulative loss of $570 million. This represents a notable rise of 75% in comparison to the corresponding period in 2022, underscoring the escalating significance of tackling cyber threats and fostering awareness about cybersecurity.

Understanding the Significance of CyberDefenders

In the rapidly evolving landscape of metaverse technology, initiatives such as CyberDefender have emerged as essential players, empowering individuals with the necessary knowledge and awareness to safely navigate this digital realm. The Hong Kong Police Force recognizes the significance of educating the public about potential risks and advocating for cybersecurity practices. By doing so, they aim to minimize the occurrence of technology-related crimes and safeguard the well-being of citizens in this digital era.
